Textual Analysis on Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead

Personally I think that this video is very interesting, as it seems to have no story line throughout as such, it still seems to captivate me every time I watch it. I like the parts in the music video where only one shot is used, however some parts are in slow motion and other parts are in real time such as when Thom Yorke is singing and there is a person behind him running in slow motion. I also like the idea of the whole video being in black and white, as it gives the whole look of the video some sort of edge.

Within the video, a lot of mid shots are used throughout and mainly  the camera is usually straight on looking at each character of the music video with no angles used. The opening shot of the music video, just before the music starts there is the use of thunder sound effects and in the background lightning can be seen when Thom, (the singer of the band) can be seen falling from the caravan to the floor. This relates with sound, and how it creates a sense of what the music video may be like before even watching. On some parts there are a mid shots, which then cut to a long shots of the same thing. The whole video is in monochrome with low key lighting, creating long shadows. There are a couple of high angled shots like the one of the insect, and a low angled time lapsed shot of the tree with stars passing by. There are a lot of long shots within the video of the band and in slow motion while the lead singer, Thom Yorke is lip syncing and performing in real time.

Editing

Image result for street spirit fade out gifThere is a lot of editing effects used in this video such as slow motion, split screen, contrast, fades/superimposition. Slow motion is used a lot and is quite often used side by side with a quick revert to normal speed so it makes quite an interesting contrast of the two. This may be done using split screening. There is a slow motion fall from one of the band members onto a chair. Here we can see they alternate between real time and slow motion effect. Slow motion has been placed very well with the pace of the song, as the song is slow and almost makes the audience feel depressed or upset. Another effect is a flash of white followed by a camera shift to a slightly different position of the same thing. Quick cuts are used of things that are slightly random like a dress twirling round. A lighting effect that is used is to use a passing light so the shadows move, such as the shot on Thom Yorke's face. This creates an effect of a lot of time passing by, the feeling we also get from the shot of the tree.

Mise-En scene

The video is set in a caravan park where a storm appears to be occurring as there is lightning and at one point in the video it seems to be windy. We can see this when Thom Yorke is struggling to to grasp/hold on to something that clearly isn't there. The whole video is shot in black and white and uses low key lighting throughout the whole video. All the outfits used within the music video are dark/black and the setting of the is also inconvenient and suspicious as it looks like a caravan park. The video is irrelevant to the lyrics of the song, it's almost random but could be seen as 'aesthetically pleasing' for the audience watching the video at home.
