Music Video Director : Michael Gondry

Michel Gondry is a French independent film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is noted for his inventive visual style and distinctive manipulation of mise en scène. He is well known for his music video collaborations with Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Björk and The White Stripes. Gondry, along with directors Spike Jonze and David Fincher, is representative of the influx of music video directors into feature film. Gondry made his feature film debut in 2001 with Human Nature.

Popular music videos he has directed:

Around the World – Daft Punk (1997)
Everlong – Foo Fighters (1997)
Music Sounds Better With You – Stardust (1998)
Gimme Shelter – The Rolling Stones (1998)
Mad World – Michael Andrews and Gary Jules (2001)
Knives Out – Radiohead (2001)
Fell in Love with a Girl – The White Stripes (2002)
No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age (2002)
Go - The Chemical Brothers (2015)
City Lights - The White Stripes (2016)

Daft Punk - Around the World

The video for this artist is very unique. From watching the video myself, i noted the fact that there was four of every character e.g. there four robots walking around in a circle, four men walking around in tracksuits and prosthetic heads, four women synchronised swimmers, four skeletons and four mummies. I wouldn't really say that this music video has a story line compared to Gondry's other work such as "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters, but is a fun and quirky video. "While the music goes in a loop, as do most Daft Punk songs, so do the participants in this video. A circular stage is set as the oddly-dressed characters proceed to travel "around the world."" Michel Gondry said himself about the music video, "I realised how genius and simple the music was. Only five different instruments, with very few patterns, each to create numerous possibilities of figures. Always using the repetition, and stopping just before it's too much." "Around the World" was Gondry's first attempt at bringing organised dancing to his music videos.

Foo Fighters - Everlong

We can clearly see a difference between both music videos, as daft punks "around the world" is more choreographed and not really a story behind the video, compared to the Foo Fighters "Everlong" which was directed in the same year. For "Everlong" there is a more band feel to it, as we have the at the end the band playing the instruments. The music video is, in part, a parody of the film The Evil Dead.
